WELLNESS EXAMS/PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE
PREVENTION is becoming a very important aspect of all of our lives and this applies to our pets as well. Our beloved animal family members age more rapidly than humans, therefore, regular physical examinations and lab work are the best way to identify and prevent health issues before they become a problem later in life. Regularly scheduled examinations can identify problems as they arise and this allows you to be proactive in assuring your pet a longer healthier life. Preventing health issues is one of the most important things that you can do for your pet. Our preventive care program consists of annual and semi-annual physical examinations, vaccinations, heartworm testing, parasite testing, dental check ups, diagnostic lab tests, and nutritional counseling. We will also help you keep up with your pet’s health needs by mailing reminders throughout the year.
SENIOR PET CARE
After 7 years of age, our pets have a greater risk of developing health issues. It is extremely important to identify the early onset of diseases to prevent future organ damage or onset of diabetes. Our older friends also are more susceptible to dental disease and obesity. The Senior Wellness Screening Program consists of a physical exam, complete blood count, chemistry panel, thyroid test, urinalysis and fecal exam. If any health issues are identified as the result of the screening, recommendations will be made to prescribe medication and diet adjustments that in many cases prevent or delay major illnesses.
SURGERY
Abshier-Meuth Animal Hospital offers a wide range of general surgical procedures as well as some orthopedic procedures. These are performed daily using the latest methods of surgical techniques and anesthesia. Surgeries are performed daily Monday-Friday during the morning hours. Usually, your pet will arrive in the morning and go home that same afternoon. During and after surgery the patient is attended by experienced staff members and monitoring equipment. Written instructions that explain follow-up care are provided when the patient is discharged from the hospital.
Many clients are concerned with anesthesia and the discomfort of surgery for their pets. Pre-surgical lab screening and Pain Management Therapy are options offered for surgery patients. The pre-surgical blood work is done in our lab and the results are known within a few minutes. The findings of this test will give indications of how well your pet will do under anesthesia and might determine if surgery should be postponed or canceled. Pain management therapy is available for your pet. Often it will consist of a pre-surgical injection and medication sent home for the following several days. Our friendly office staff can give you more information on surgeries and the options offered.
DENTISTRY
We provide an up-to-date dental health care program for your pet. Regular dental exams are performed during annual and semi-annual check ups. Recommendations for problems noted during these visits can help eliminate tooth loss and infections.
A dental cleaning procedure may be recommended for your pet. This hospital procedure, performed under anesthesia, scales the tarter off and then polishes the teeth. Keeping your pet’s teeth and mouth healthy can add years to their life. Gum disease, infections and bacteria from the mouth can spread to organs in the body and this can lead to heart and kidney disease.
Due to the wide range of dental deficits that we treat, it is required that a veterinarian examine your pet prior to scheduling any dental work. This will ensure that our team of professionals knows exactly what is required to make your pet's smile even more beautiful and healthy. Dental staging can even be done during regularly scheduled visits for vaccinations and examinations.
PHARMACY/ ONLINE PHARMACY ORDERS
Abshier-Meuth Animal Hospital has a fully stocked pet pharmacy. We work closely with compounding pharmacies when a specialty medication is needed for any of our patients. If you need refills of medications, please call our office and we will have these ready for you when you come in. If you need to order medication for delivery to your home, we can send the medications directly to you. For even easier online service, you can order the medication for home delivery from our online pharmacy.
You will need to register to use the online pharmacy feature. To register go to ONLINE PHARMACY.
NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING
Our staff works very closely with pet food distributors to stay up-to-date on the latest information about pet nutrition. We hold in-clinic training for our staff on a regular basis and our doctors go to continuing education classes to speak with experts in the field. A proper diet can clear away many health care issues for your pet. Our office carries a wide range of health pet diets as well as a full range of prescription diets to help with medical conditions.
BEHAVIOR COUNSELING
Many of the frustrating issues that we have with our pets can be managed with behavioral modification training. However, some issues are beyond the control of just retraining. Our health care professionals can help you with these issues and rule out medical problems as a source of the behavior.
BOARDING
We have an indoor kenneling facility for dogs and cats. Our boarded animals are managed by our veterinary technician staff. Should you need to kennel your pet, you can be assured that they are treated with tender loving care just as all of our patients are. Kennel space is limited and a reservation must be made with our office before we can assure you of a space available for your needs. Often while we are booking our families summer vacations or trips to relatives' houses through the holidays, we postpone taking care of what to do with our pets while we are away. By booking your pets' kenneling as early as you can, you eliminate the frustration of that last-minute scramble. And who doesn't love eliminating frustration?
X-RAYS/ULTRASOUNDS/ORTHOPEDIC EVALUATION
If your pet needs diagnostics beyond an external exam, our office can perform x-rays and ultrasounds to image internal organs and bone structure. X-rays and ultrasounds can also provide information about litter size and delivery dates for pregnancy. Some X-rays and ultrasounds can be performed as office visits, however some require anesthesia and a hospital stay in order to obtain the best views.
If an orthopedic evaluation is needed due to some injury or condition, x-rays will show these conditions and provide the doctor with information necessary to help you make a decision regarding your pet's health.
We also work with the Orthopedic Foundation of America to check your dog for hip and elbow dysplasia. It is highly recommended that you have these areas checked as the problems they often have are hereditary.
